Costumes for Ghatu Dance
Ghatu is a tradition of the Gurung tribe, one of the indigenous peoples. Ghatu dance is performed not only for fun and entertainment, it also has socio-cultural values with stories of kings, queens and so on.
Basically it is a slow group dance performance that involves re-enacting scenes from local mythology and is accompanied by song and music. The performers are dressed in Gurung cultural dress and jewellery. A crown made with flowers and roasted paddy is also worn by the dancers. This dance is performed mainly during the full moon of April. This is why Ghatu has great social and cultural importance within Gurung people.
