Sinh (Laos Skirt)
Sinh has long been one of the most unique products that the Lao people take pride in. Made of silk and cotton, it boasts a huge variety of stories, patterns, designs and colours, many of which inspired by ancient patterns. By the fabric patterns and the production style, Lao people can identify its origins; and for this reason sinh is more than a traditional garment but also plays a significant role as a signature art piece, reflecting the beautiful cultures and beliefs of different ethnic groups in Laos. It is worn by Lao women on many occasions and official functions.

Sinh can be divided into three important parts:

  • Hua sinh (the upper part) – typically hidden under the belt;
  • Puen sinh (the main body) – represents small details usually consisting of one or two colours;
  • Tin sinh (the lower part) – the hem of the skirt always containing a lot of patterns and colours.
